In 2015, Donna Colton added cancer survivor to her resume. After battling the disease and the insurance companies with Sam by her side and with the help of a GoFundMe account and Donnapalooza, a fundraising concert sparked by friends Joanna Jewett, Julie Briggs and Stacey Waterman, that saw hundreds of local musicians, fans and friends give time and money to support Colton in her time of need; she thought she had it licked.
In 2016, Donna & Sam were invited to be part of the Acoustic Guitar Project of Syracuse curated by Jeffrey Pepper Rodgers. They got the guitar, named Sfumare (to fade, vanish) for one week. Musical healing happened. Donna had written down some lines while going through her cancer treatment. She shared them with Sam and Shattered Stars came to be.
